Tips to Getting Listed on Search Engines
    1. Complete your website before submitting it to search engines. Resist the temptation to submit your website to search engines until it is ready! We use Adobe Dreamweaver for all of our web authoring needs. If you can, pick a domain name that is related to what your website is selling.

    2. Avoid long downloads. Your website should load quickly! Images should be optimized and compressed. There are many tools available to optimize images. We use Adobe Photoshop for all of our optimization needs and image creation.

    3. Use proper Meta Tags. It's a good idea to have proper keyword and description meta tags on your pages for search engines to crawl.

      <head>
      <meta name="author" content="Your Name">
      <meta name="keywords" content="list of your keywords, seperated by commans">
      <meta name="description" content="One or two sentence long description of your website">
      </head>

      TIP: Try not to use repetitive keywords within your meta tags. Repeating the same keyword or a variation of the word more than a few (2-3) times is considered bad and can get search engines to ignore your website.

    4. Use a descriptive title for the page. The title of the page should describe what is contained within that page.
      Example: Instead of "Springs Hosting", we've used "Search Engine Tips for Getting Listed - Springs Hosting" for this page. Your title should reflect what you expect to be entered into a search engine to find your website.

    5. Popular Search Engines to Submit your website to:

      1. Google - Submission Link

      2. Dmoz.org - Directions

      3. Yahoo - Submission Link
        (NOTE: Yahoo also owns All the Web and AltaVista)

      4. Live Search (Microsoft) - Submission Link

    6. Get other sites to link to yours. While this technique does not appear to be as useful as it used to be, it never hurts to be thorough! Try to find sites that relate to your website that are willing to link to you.

    7. Be Patient. It can take months to see the benefits of the changes you've made to your website. As your website is "discovered" it will start to develop higher traffic. Depending on what you are using your website for, you may want to sign up for Adsense with Google to generate a fair amount of side income from the traffic you've produced.
